Stacking Ice Cream Scoops

We’ve got the inside scoop on teaching patterns! Teach your little one to recognize, describe, and copy patterns using a colorful sweet treat!

LEARNING GOALS:

AGE: 2 – 5 Years Old

TIME: 10 Mins

CATEGORY: Logic, Patterns

MATERIALS:

  • Colored paper
  • Markers

INSTRUCTIONS

On several note cards, draw ice cream cones with scoops of ice cream in various patterns (ie: chocolate, strawberry, chocolate, strawberry).

Cut out larger versions of the different ice cream flavors drawn on the notecards earlier. Cut out a cone, too!

Ask your child to select a note card with an ice cream scoop pattern.

Support them as they work to describe and copy the pattern on the note card using the paper ice cream scoops.

TIPS
  • During the activity, discuss how each flavor tastes like to help expand their vocabulary and verbal skills.
  • When you feel comfortable that your child is able to copy the ice cream pattern, ask if they can continue it!
