How To Teach The Alphabet

Learning the ABCs at an early age is fundamental for reading and writing. According to research, children start showing interest in learning the ABCs around the age of 2. Even though there isn’t an ideal time to start teaching, it is never too early to start and have fun while doing so!

There are many tools you can experiment with that involve reading, singing, and playing. The effectiveness of the method will differ according to your child’s characteristics. Some kids learn more quickly and others may need more repetition and time. There are kinesthetic learners yet, there are also visual learners. Ultimately, it is important to start getting your little one familiar with the basics of learning ABCs as early as possible.

Here are some of the most effective ways of teaching the alphabet to your little ones:

The ABC Song

  • The alphabet song is one of the first songs a child learns.  It is memorable and easy to sing along. Start by singing to your child as a baby and continue to do so in the upcoming years. Being familiar with the alphabet and knowing the letter names from an early age will benefit them for future reading demands.

Alphabet Games

  • Every moment is a learning moment with our little ones! While driving or waiting in line, play simple games like, “Alphabet Hunt,” by using the signs, license plates, or any words you see! Or, give the “I Spy” game a twist by saying “I spy with my little eye something that begins with the letter S,” then provide hints like “it’s only seen during the day and it starts with ssss.” Not only do these promote their literacy skills, it can also help with their focus and attention.

Start with timeless classics like, Dr. Seuss’ ABC and Chicka Chicka Book Boom, which are already designed to practice phonics!
